That's what many homeowners say when they finally get around to replacing their outdated kitchen cabinets. But before you start shopping for new cabinets, there are a few things you need to consider first.

Start with a Solid Foundation

Before you go out and buy new cabinets, make sure you have a solid foundation. First, check the condition of your existing cabinets. If they are damaged or worn out, you'll need to replace them. Next, measure the space where you plan to install your new cabinets. Make sure you have enough room to fit the small cabinets with doors. Finally, decide whether you want to install your new cabinets yourself or hire a professional cabinet installer.

When choosing the right wood for your kitchen cabinets, it’s important to consider the style you want. Some of the most popular woods include oak, maple, cherry, mahogany, and birch. Each type of wood has its own unique characteristics, so be sure to choose the one that best suits your style.

Oak is a hardwood that is known for its strength and durability. It comes in a variety of finishes, including natural, stained, and painted. Maple is a close second in terms of popularity. It is also a hardwood that is strong and durable, and it comes in a variety of paint finishes for kitchen cabinets as well. Cherry is another popular choice and it has a beautiful reddish hue. Mahogany is another hardwood that is known for its rich coloration, and birch is a softwood that is light in color and tends to be less expensive than other types of wood.

Sand Down Any Rough Edges

If you notice any rough edges after sanding down the cabinet doors, apply wood filler to them. Let it dry completely, then sand off the excess with fine grit sandpaper. You will want a good smooth finish before you add the paint for doors and trim.

Apply a Clear Coat

If you want to keep your cabinet looking brand new, apply a clear coat after sanding. This will protect the surface and make it easier to clean spills and stains.

It is important that you allow the clear coat to dry completely before adding any hardware or using the cabinet.

Let it Dry

Once you've applied the first coat, let it dry completely before applying another coat. This will help prevent any streaks or bubbles from forming. After the second coat has dried, use a soft cloth to wipe away any excess dust or dirt.
